What to do when water gets trapped in your ear
Water can sometimes become trapped in your ear after swimming, which can be uncomfortable. There are a few things you can do to get the water out. One option is to try tilting your head to the side and opening your mouth. This will help the water drain out. Another option is to use a blow dryer on the lowest setting to help evaporate the water. You can also try using a cotton swab to help remove the water.
Tilt your head to the side
Tilt your head to the side so that the water can drain out. If water is still stuck after tilting your head, try tilting it the other way. This should help the water to drip out so that your ear feels less full.
Use gravity to your advantage
The simplest way to remove water from your ear is to let gravity do its job. “If you tilt your head to the affected ear, like you’re trying to give yourself an earring, gravity will help drain the water out,” says Dr. Russell. “You can also do what we call the side-lying position. Lying on your side with the affected ear up will also help drain the water out.”
If these positions don’t work, try jumping up and down. “The force of gravity plus the movement helps jar the water loose so it can drain out,” says Dr. Russell. Do this for a minute or so until you feel the water draining from your ear.
Create a vacuum
To start, tilt your head to the side so the affected ear is uppermost. Next, try to pull your earlobe up and back. This simple movement can sometimes release the vacuum and allow the water to drain out. If that doesn’t work, try this:
Pinch your nose shut, and hold it. Take a deep breath in through your mouth, then close your mouth and let the air out slowly through your nose. As you do this mild “Valsalva maneuver,” you should feel positive pressure build in your middle ear. That pressure will help push the water out of your ear canal.
Use a blow dryer
If you have a blow dryer available, you can try using it to remove the water from your ear. Just be sure to use the lowest setting and hold the blow dryer several inches away from your ear. Keep the blow dryer moving so that you don’t overheat your ear or skin.
How to prevent water from getting in your ear in the first place
If you’re someone who loves swimming, but hates that feeling of water getting trapped in your ear, then this article is for you. In this article, we will be discussing how to get water out of your ear after swimming, as well as how to prevent water from getting in your ear in the first place.
Wear earplugs
While you can’t keep water from getting in your ears entirely, you can reduce the amount that gets in by wearing earplugs. Make sure to get earplugs that fit snugly in your ear canal.
There are a few different types of earplugs:
-Foam earplugs: These are made of soft, spongy foam that expands to fill your ear canal. Foam earplugs are disposable and can be used once then thrown away.
-Silicone earplugs: These are made of soft silicone and have a flanged design that fits snugly in your ear canal. Silicone earplugs can be reused multiple times and are easy to clean.
-Wax earplugs: These are made of beeswax or other types of wax and have a conical shape that fits snugly in your ear canal. Wax earplugs can be reused multiple times and are easy to clean.
If you’re swimming in dirty water, you may also want to consider wearing a swim cap to keep water out of your ears.
Put your hair up
One of the best ways to prevent water from getting in your ear in the first place is to put your hair up. If you have long hair, putting it up in a bun or ponytail will help keep it out of your ears when you’re swimming. If you have short hair, you can put it up in a clip or headband.
use a swim cap
One of the best ways to keep water out of your ears while swimming is to use a swim cap. swim caps keep your head dry and help prevent water from entering your ears in the first place. If you don’t have a swim cap, you can make one out of a latex balloon. Just cut off the end of the balloon and stretch it over your entire head.
If you’re swimming in a pool, there’s less chance of water getting in your ears because the water is contained. But if you’re swimming in open water, such as a lake or ocean, there’s a greater chance that water will enter your ears. To prevent this, you can use ear plugs or special headphones that seal off your ear canal.
